Defense Minister Robles Reaffirms Confidence in Supreme Court Following Attorney General’s Conviction
Minister of Defense Margarita Robles publicly expressed her “total and absolute” confidence in the Supreme Court on March 15, 2024, following the release of the court’s sentencing of State Attorney general Álvaro García Ortiz. Robles emphasized that trust in all institutions is essential to a functioning democracy.
Sentence Details and Delayed Publication
The Supreme court’s decision,announced 19 days after its initial ruling,supports the conviction of García Ortiz for leaking confidential information related to tax crimes allegedly committed by the partner of Isabel Díaz Ayuso,a prominent political figure. Specifically, the court found García Ortiz guilty of revealing confidential data concerning the case and issuing a related press release on March 14, 2024. The sentence includes a two-year disqualification from serving as attorney general and a fine of 7,200 euros.
Internal Division Within the Court
While the majority of the court - five magistrates – supported the conviction, two magistrates dissented, advocating for García Ortiz’s acquittal. Robles acknowledged this internal division,noting the 5-2 split,and stated her belief that the ruling would have been more effective had it been made public sooner.
