Aktau, Kazakhstan – A Christmas Day flight from Baku, Azerbaijan to Grozny, Russia ended in tragedy when an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 crashed near Aktau International Airport in western Kazakhstan, killing at least 38 people.

Kazakh vice Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev, leading the state commission investigating the crash, confirmed the grim toll.”The situation is not good,” he said in a meeting with Azerbaijani representatives in Aktau. “There are 38 fatalities.”

The aircraft, operated by Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), was carrying an estimated 69 to 72 passengers and crew. While initial reports were unclear on the exact number of casualties, authorities confirmed that 32 people survived the crash.

“The remains of the deceased are in poor condition, mostly burned,” Bozumbayev explained. “They have been transported to the morgue for identification.”

He added that 29 survivors, including two children, are hospitalized. eleven are in critical but stable condition, while the rest are listed in moderate condition.

The cause of the crash remains under inquiry. Early speculation centered around a possible bird strike or an oxygen tank explosion. However, a video circulating on social media, purportedly showing damage to the plane’s fuselage, has fueled speculation about a potential missile strike.
