Big Bear Lake’s Famous Bald Eagle Family: Jackie, Shadow, and Their Eaglets
Jackie and Shadow, a pair of bald eagles, have become reality stars thanks to a live stream of their nest at Big Bear Lake in San Bernardino County, California. Their two offspring, Sunny and Gizmo, are nearly ready to leave the nest and begin their own adventures.
Since October 2015,Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV),an environmental non-profit,has maintained the eagle cam. The live stream allows viewers to observe the eagles sharing meals, relaxing, and interacting. Sandy Steers, FOBBV’s executive director, noted Shadow sometiems playfully nips at Jackie.
Steers began watching the nest years ago, even before the eagle cam, when Jackie’s parents, Ricky and Lucy, occupied it. “I got to watch Jackie grow up through a spotting scope, and it completely hooked me,” Steers said.
The YouTube page boasts over 638,000 subscribers, with thousands tuning in at any given moment. The celebrity bald eagles even have their own merchandise, including plushies, tote bags, and sweatshirts, sold by FOBBV.
“I think what draws people is that nature is captivating, and most of us haven’t really had the chance to sit and study it,” steers said. “It connects people with themselves and their emotions.”

Steers describes Jackie as serious and the boss,while Shadow is autonomous but knows jackie’s rules. before shadow, Jackie’s first partner was Mr. B. after Mr.B left, Shadow, a persistent young eagle, arrived and eventually became Jackie’s mate.
Sunny and Gizmo are Jackie and Shadow’s fifth and sixth eaglets. According to FOBBV’s Eagle Log, Gizmo is believed to be female, based on her size, behavior, and “obsession with food.” Sunny’s sex remains undetermined.
At 11 weeks old, the eaglets are almost ready to fly. A “fledge watch” is underway as fans anticipate their first flights.
“They don’t look quite ready to me,” Steers said. “But maybe that’s just me hoping they stay longer.”
