Baby Keem’s long-awaited new album, Ca$ino, dropped on Friday and has quickly become a central topic of conversation in the rap world. The album builds upon the foundation laid by Keem’s 2020 project, The Melodic Blue, offering a mature and introspective look into the artist’s life and experiences.

At just over 37 minutes in length, Ca$ino is Keem’s most concise project to date. This brevity doesn’t equate to a lack of substance, however. Every bar and hook is carefully constructed, contributing to a cohesive and emotionally resonant listening experience. The album’s production features a dynamic range of collaborators, including Cardo, Danja, and Sounwave, among others, creating a varied sonic landscape.

One of the album’s highlights is the featured verse from Kendrick Lamar on the track “Good Flirts.” The collaboration has been widely praised, with listeners noting Lamar’s lyrical dexterity and the song’s overall energy. The track also showcases New York singer-songwriter Momo Boyd, whose vocals add a unique texture to the song, trading lines with Lamar and delivering an infectious hook.

The album isn’t without its more unconventional moments. Keem’s verse on “Circus Circus Free$tyle” includes a line where he states, “I almost died when I took the vaccine.” This lyric has sparked discussion online, with some questioning its meaning and implications. Keem quickly moves on to other topics within the same song, rapping about financial setbacks and family matters.

Another standout collaboration is “$ex Appeal,” featuring Too $hort. This intergenerational pairing brings together Keem’s contemporary style with $hort’s established West Coast sound, creating a track reminiscent of classic strip club anthems. The song has already gained traction on TikTok, with users recreating dance moves associated with the track.

Momo Boyd’s contribution extends beyond “Good Flirts,” as her presence on Ca$ino is being recognized as a breakout moment for the artist. According to reports, Boyd connected with pgLang co-founder Dave Free in 2022, who saw potential in her work. After attending one of Infinity Song’s performances in Los Angeles, Free invited Boyd to collaborate, leading to her involvement on the album.

Ca$ino represents a significant step forward for Baby Keem, establishing him as a prominent voice in the current rap landscape. The album’s tight runtime, carefully curated features, and introspective lyrics demonstrate a level of maturity and artistic vision that sets him apart. Despite some moments sparking debate, the album has undoubtedly generated significant discussion and solidified Keem’s position as a rising star.
