A German backpacker has spoken of her profound gratitude after being found alive and well following an 11-night ordeal lost in the remote Western Australian outback.
Carolina Wilga, 24, was travelling in a van when it became bogged in the Karroun Hill Nature Reserve bushland. Despite initial attempts to free the vehicle, Wilga made the arduous decision to abandon it after just one night, embarking on a solo trek for help.
A Test of Survival in the Wilderness
Wilga’s journey was a harrowing test of endurance. With minimal food and water, she relied on her instincts and the sun to guide her, walking approximately 24 kilometres west in the hope of finding a road. For 11 days, she battled the harsh elements, facing the immense challenge of survival in a vast and unforgiving landscape.
“Western Australia has taught me what it really means to be part of a true community,” wilga shared, reflecting on her experience. She believes her survival was a direct result of an “astonishing outpouring of support” from those who searched for her and held onto hope.

Upon her rescue, Wilga expressed immense gratitude towards the motorist who found her, describing the woman, Tania, as a “rescuer and angel.” Her thanks extended to the police, the search parties, the German Consulate, and the medical staff who provided care with “so much compassion.”
“The thought of all the people who believed in me, searched for me, and kept hoping for me gave me the strength to carry on during my darkest moments,” Wilga stated, her voice filled with emotion. “For this, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
