Wilga,24,was discovered dehydrated and weary after her Mitsubishi van became bogged in the Karroun Hill Nature Reserve.
A Desperate Ordeal in the Outback
Wilga’s ordeal began when her van became stuck approximately 35 kilometers off a main track. Despite having water, food, and clothing in her vehicle, she made the fateful decision to leave it, a choice she later explained was due to a meaningful head injury sustained when the car rolled down a slope. “Consequently of the accident, I left my car in a state of confusion and got lost,” she stated in a message released by WA Police. For 11 nights, Wilga navigated the unforgiving elements with minimal supplies. Overnight temperatures in the bushland plummeted to near freezing, exacerbating her condition. She suffered cuts, bruises, dehydration, and severe fatigue. Her survival is a testament to her resilience and the eventual intervention of a kind stranger.

Wilga expressed profound gratitude for her rescuers, especially a woman named Tania, whom she described as a “rescuer and angel.” This encounter highlights the unbelievable spirit of community that can emerge in times of crisis. “Western Australia has taught me what it really means to be part of a true community,” Wilga shared, emphasizing that the “incredible outpouring of support” was instrumental in her survival.
“The thought of all the people who believed in me, searched for me, and kept hoping for me gave me the strength to carry on during my darkest moments,” she added, her voice filled with emotion. ”For this, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
The Journey to survival
After her van became bogged, Wilga spent only one night with the vehicle. Believing her best chance of finding help was to head towards a road, she followed the sun, walking approximately 24 kilometers west. This arduous trek, undertaken with limited resources, ultimately led to her discovery.
