Bacolod City to Host First Terra Madre Asia Pacific: A New Era for Sustainable Gastronomy Tourism
Bacolod City to Host Terra Madre Asia Pacific in 2025
Bacolod City will host the first-ever Terra Madre Asia Pacific in 2025. Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco announced this on November 21 during the Terra Madre Visayas program.
Frasco highlighted the significance of this event, stating it affirmatively positions the Philippines as a leader in sustainable gastronomy tourism in the region. She expressed pride in Bacolod’s designation as a slow food hub in Asia.
Bacolod and Negros Occidental have a strong sugar heritage and a commitment to organic farming. These elements enhance the region’s culinary traditions and biodiversity. Frasco noted that slow food emphasizes community efforts to preserve food heritage.
The Terra Madre event will include a slow food expo, an international forum, and community experiences. These activities will promote new ideas about food and tourism while celebrating the country’s rich culinary roots. They aim to highlight local ingredients and raise awareness of farmers and fisherfolk.
Mayor Albee Benitez welcomed this opportunity, linking it to national leadership support. He aims to position Bacolod as a premier destination for food tourism, showcasing local ingredients and hospitality.
Terra Madre, part of the global Slow Food movement, promotes traditional food cultures and combats fast food culture. In September, Fondazione Slow Food Italy partnered with local organizations to advance slow food initiatives in Bacolod, aspiring to establish it as the Slow Food International Hub for Asia Pacific.
