Initial Setbacks for Gaza-Bound Humanitarian Mission
The Global Sumud Flotilla‘s attempt to reach Gaza and challenge the Israeli blockade has encountered immediate difficulties. As of Monday afternoon, five of the thirty ships that departed from the port of Barcelona were forced to return, and two others remained docked due to mechanical issues. These setbacks are attributed to challenging sea conditions, despite a decrease in wind strength compared to Sunday, when several vessels were already compelled to turn back.
the primary impact has been felt by the smaller vessels, particularly sailboats, which are more vulnerable to strong waves. Participants reported experiencing dizziness, discomfort, and vomiting during the night at sea. Damage to ships, including water leaks and electrical/mechanical malfunctions, is being assessed to determine if repairs will allow vessels to rejoin the mission.
Route Adjustment and Tunisian rendezvous
Approximately twenty vessels are currently en route to Tunisia. They are expected to make a technical stop on the Balearic coast to await the arrival of the remaining ships from Barcelona. For security reasons, the association has not disclosed the specific Tunisian port where they will dock.
In Tunisia, these vessels will join another twenty ships preparing to participate in the flotilla’s mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza and break the Israeli blockade. Organizers aim to assemble the largest humanitarian fleet since expeditions began in 2008.
Concerns Over Sabotage and Past Incidents
The organizers have expressed concerns about potential sabotage, citing incidents involving some ships in Italian ports. They also referenced the 2010 interception of the Mavi Marmara cruise ship by Israeli military forces, during which ten crew members were killed. Despite these concerns, organizers remain optimistic about achieving a record number of ships heading to Gaza.
Individual Vessel Challenges
The sailboat Marinette, a 12-meter vessel, experienced engine failure early Tuesday morning and was forced to rely on sail power. A mechanic from the organization is expected to meet the vessel at a Balearic port. Despite initial difficulties, the crew, including Australian participant Cameron (who requested his last name not be published), managed to restart the engine, though its operation remains suboptimal. The crew remains hopeful of reaching Tunisia.
Timeline and Participant Details
The initial estimated journey duration was 15 to 20 days. Though, the adverse weather and necessary returns to port may delay the flotilla’s arrival in Gaza until the end of the month. The expedition involves approximately 200 participants from 44 countries, including prominent figures such as Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, and Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila.
