The February 23rd, 22nd BAFTA Film Awards were marked by an unexpected and distressing incident: John Davidson, a Tourette’s syndrome (TS) activist and the subject of the nominated film “I Swear,” experienced involuntary vocal tics during the ceremony, including the use of a racial slur. Davidson’s tics occurred while actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting an award. As David Whitlam, who also lives with TS and coprolalia, explained, the outbursts are not deliberate acts but rather the result of the condition’s impact on the brain. “An ‘involuntary slur’ is surely oxymoronic and that is precisely our problem,” Whitlam stated, highlighting the mischaracterization of the event as a deliberate act of racism.

The Fallout and Differing Perspectives

The incident quickly drew reactions from prominent figures in the entertainment industry. Oscar winner Jamie Foxx expressed his dismay, stating the use of the N-word was “unacceptable.” Wendell Pierce, known for his role in “The Wire,” emphasized the need for an immediate and unequivocal apology to Lindo and Jordan, prioritizing the harm caused by the slur over the explanation of its involuntary nature. Jemele Hill also voiced concerns on social media, emphasizing the pain caused to Black individuals by such language, regardless of the circumstances.

However, many within the TS community have defended Davidson, emphasizing the involuntary nature of his tics and the irony of the situation given the subject matter of “I Swear,” a film that aims to raise awareness and understanding of the condition. Whitlam pointed out the hypocrisy of inviting Davidson to the event and then condemning him for exhibiting the very symptoms his film explores. He expressed concern that Davidson might be “cowering at home, crying” due to the backlash.

Living with TS, particularly with coprolalia, presents significant challenges. Whitlam described developing coping mechanisms to navigate potentially triggering situations, such as actively seeking out stimulating environments like rock concerts and choir practices to occupy his mind. He also employs self-talk strategies to manage his tics. He noted that avoiding situations where one is expected to behave perfectly is often necessary.

James, a Canadian man diagnosed with TS at age 22, shared that his symptoms have lessened with age. While he has never experienced the involuntary use of racial slurs, he recounted being expelled from school due to inappropriate vocalizations, which ultimately impacted his educational opportunities. He expressed both compassion for Davidson and acknowledged the pain caused by the slur, recognizing his own experiences with racism.

The Importance of Understanding and Empathy

Davidson himself expressed his mortification at causing distress with his tics, stating that he left the auditorium early in the ceremony. The incident has prompted a broader discussion about the responsibility of event organizers to anticipate and manage potential challenges for individuals with neurological conditions. Some argue that Bafta and the BBC should have been better prepared to address the situation, particularly given the film’s subject matter and Davidson’s presence.

Gavin Higgins, a composer with TS, hopes the controversy will lead to increased awareness and understanding of the condition.
