Baldwin Park Greenway Officially Opens After Decade-Long Development

Baldwin Park residents now have access to a new 2.3-mile walk and bike path, the Baldwin Park Greenway, following the completion of phases 1 and 2 of the project. The creekside path has been landscaped and equipped with amenities including benches, water fountains, bike repair stations, and an ADA accessible entrance.

The Greenway runs along the Big Dalton Wash and San Gabriel River, offering a dedicated off-street path from the city’s border with El Monte at Ramona Boulevard to Baldwin Park Boulevard, a major employment center home to facilities for Kaiser Permanente and UPS.

Baldwin Park’s Chief Executive Officer, Manny Carrillo, who previously served as Community Services Director, highlighted the importance of perseverance in bringing the project to fruition. “Transformational projects like this require patience, coordination, unwavering belief in the outcome,” Carrillo said at the grand opening. “I take great pride in delivering a project like this to our residents. Spaces like this strengthen neighborhoods, promote wellness, and build communities.”

While officially opening this month, the basic path has been unofficially open for some time, providing cyclists with an alternative to busy city streets. The route offers views of the San Gabriel River, Big Dalton Creek, the San Gabriel Mountains, and surrounding infrastructure including powerlines, bridges, silos, and the 605 Freeway.

The Greenway’s completion marks a significant step in a larger plan to expand the path to a total of five miles in the coming years. Phase 3 will extend the path another 2.8 miles northeast along the Big Dalton Wash, up to Ramona near the Metrolink station, city hall and downtown Baldwin Park.

The opening of the Greenway coincides with ongoing park projects throughout Baldwin Park, including developments at Barnes Park, Montenegro Park, Roadside Park, Morgan Park, Hilda Solis Park, and the Susan Rubio Zocalo, as well as a forthcoming greening project along the next phase of the Greenway.

Residents can access the Greenway by bike via the San Gabriel River path, crossing from the main path at Ramona Boulevard. Bus access is available via Foothill Transit line 486 to Baldwin Park Avenue and Bess Avenue, or lines 190 or 488 to Ramona Boulevard and Gilman Road.

Streetsblog’s San Gabriel Valley coverage is supported by Foothill Transit, offering car-free travel throughout the San Gabriel Valley with connections to the A Line Stations across the Foothills and Commuter Express lines traveling into the heart of downtown L.A. Foothill Transit. “Foothill Transit. Going Good Places.”
