Baldwin Park Officer Killed in Shooting, Civilian Dead

A Baldwin Park police officer, identified as 35-year-old Samuel Riveros, died in a shooting late saturday. Another officer, Anthony Pimentel, was injured but released from the hospital Sunday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A civilian also died in the incident.

The incident occurred on Palm Avenue, where video footage captured 11 shots fired around 7:16 p.m. Saturday. A nearby resident,who wished to remain anonymous,initially mistook the gunfire for fireworks until the street filled with police vehicles.
Additional shots, six in total, were heard near Palm and Filhurst avenues around 7:26 p.m., according to another video. Helicopters circled overhead as multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Los angeles County Sheriff’s Department and West Covina and El Monte police departments, arrived on scene.
Assemblywoman Blanca Rubio, D-Baldwin Park, expressed her condolences to the families and colleagues affected by the Baldwin Park shooting. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell also extended his sympathies to the Baldwin Park Police Department.
“This heartbreaking loss is a solemn reminder of the risk officers take every day when protecting their community,” McDonnell said in a statement.
