A Baldwin Park police officer died and another was hospitalized following a Saturday night shooting, according to the Baldwin Park Police Department and the Los Angeles sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred on the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue after 7 p.m., when officers responded to reports of gunshots and a person down.
Arriving at the scene, officers discovered an adult male dead, in what authorities are calling a double murder. Sheriff Robert Luna of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said his department is leading the examination. Authorities believe they have recovered the weapon used in the shooting.
Luna stated that an adult male suspect, believed to be responsible for shooting both the officer and the other victim, is in custody. The suspect reportedly fired at officers before being struck by gunfire. He was transported to a hospital and is in stable condition, officials said.
Robert Lopez, chief of Baldwin Police, described the fallen officer as “an amazing man” during a Sunday morning news conference. The officer’s name is being withheld until all family members are notified. Lopez added that the officer was an avid snowboarder and a Los Angeles Dodgers fan who enjoyed traveling to different stadiums to watch the team.
