Bali Boat Transfers Banned After Deadly Wave Tragedy
Bali Fast boat Services Suspended Due to Risky High waves
Recent hazardous sea conditions have prompted the temporary suspension of fast boat services to and from Bali, impacting travel plans for tourists heading to popular destinations like the Gili Islands, Lombok, and Nusa Penida. High waves, reaching up to 13 feet in some areas, pose a important risk to passenger safety, leading boat operators to prioritize caution.
Why Are Fast boat Services Cancelled?
The decision to halt services wasn’t taken lightly. several factors contributed to this necessary safety measure. According to the Center for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics in Denpasar, Bali is currently experiencing sunny and cloudy weather accompanied by significant wave heights.
“The weather is sunny and cloudy with a high wave height of 2-4 meters,” explained Chief of Meteorological Operations, Wayan Musteana. “For the southern waters of Bali, based on the BMKG wave model, shows that there is an increase in the height of sea waves in the southern waters of Bali, which reaches 4 meters [13 feet] or a high wave category.”
This time of year typically brings heavier swells to the region. GoBoat, a major boat operator, proactively adheres to strict Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) designed to protect both passengers and staff.
A GoBoat spokesperson stated, “At GoBoat, we adhere to strict SOPs [Standard Operating Procedures] which have been designed and tested to keep our guests and staff safe from conditions such as the current situation. This time of year brings some heavy swells, and we’re expecting to have patchy service for August. Weather permitting, we might resume service Saturday afternoon, but this is also subject to potential condition changes. Safety is our highest priority. People’s lives are in our hands, and this obligation is unmatched.”
The cancellations follow recent harrowing incidents, including a boat being flipped by a large wave, forcing passengers to swim for their lives. (You can view footage of this incident here). Another video shows a boat being fully wrecked by a powerful wave in Indonesian waters (see it here). These events underscore the potential dangers and the importance of prioritizing safety.
What Does This Mean for Your Travel Plans?
If you have a fast boat ticket booked, or are planning to travel to or from Bali by fast boat in the near future, here’s what you need to know:
Check with Your Operator: The most crucial step is to contact your boat operator directly for the latest updates on service resumption. Don’t rely solely on online facts, as conditions can change rapidly.
Be Flexible: Be prepared for potential delays or cancellations. It’s wise to build some flexibility into your travel itinerary, especially during the August swell season.
Consider alternatives: While fast boats are a popular option, explore alternative transportation methods if possible.Ferries, though slower, may continue to operate in conditions where fast boats are suspended.
Prioritize Safety: Remember that the cancellations are in place for your safety. Don’t attempt to find alternative, unofficial transportation that may compromise your well-being.
