Ballad Health CIO Drives ‍Digital⁢ Transformation in Rural Healthcare

Pam Austin, chief ⁢data⁤ officer ⁤at Ballad‌ Health in Johnson City, Tenn., has ⁣spent‌ five years spearheading a‌ system-wide digital transformation.‍ Her work focuses on streamlining technology, enhancing clinician workflows, ‍and broadening access ⁤to care across ⁢the⁣ associationS largely rural service area. This‍ healthcare CIO role is vital for the region.

One key project Austin directed involved⁢ standardizing ⁣Ballad’s technology infrastructure ⁤across its​ 20 hospitals, half ⁤of which​ serve ⁤rural communities. This was achieved by consolidating systems and transitioning to a single Epic⁢ platform.The goal⁤ is to reduce‍ redundant applications and improve usability ​for clinicians, Austin said.

Austin emphasized that usability‍ is a critical component of any prosperous digital transformation. the health system doesn’t implement tech for tech’s sake.All ⁣IT initiatives at Ballad‍ start by addressing​ a clear clinical or operational ⁤need.

“We work closely with our frontline team members in clinical areas to ⁣understand their workflows​ and what their pain⁣ points are,” Austin ‌said.”We talk to​ them about their⁤ use ‍of the EMR and what ⁣a⁤ better ‌experience should look like, because usability is critical – if a tool adds ​more clicks ⁣or complexity, it’s not going to last.”

Austin believes ⁤technology should support, not complicate, care delivery, especially ​in rural communities. She said most tools should “fade into the background,”⁣ enabling more face ​time between patients and providers.

According to austin, the ​biggest ‍challenge in rural areas isn’t technology⁤ itself, but change management. She noted that patients in rural communities often have long-standing, trusted relationships with their providers.

“In rural communities, you’ll see patients often have longstanding, trusted relationships⁤ with their‍ providers directly,” Austin said. “And then we introduce digital care models like telehealth – so that has ⁤to ‌be ‌done⁢ with‍ care, not disruption. We have to take a‌ patient-first approach.”

Austin ⁤added, “We focus on intuitive tools and provider guidance. We have the provider work directly with their patient so they can build that trust with a familiar clinician. That provider walks the patient through ​the new process⁤ and how to adopt that technology, then‍ the adoption ⁤happens faster.”

Austin believes CIOs must be more strategic than ever. They need‍ to anticipate⁣ future technologies ‍and prepare their organizations accordingly. she also⁢ emphasized the ⁣importance of understanding how ​technology impacts all areas of the organization, from revenue cycle ‍to nursing.

“We need to be forward thinking – looking at what ⁣technology is coming down‌ the pipe and preparing our organization‍ accordingly,” Austin said. “And then we ⁢embed analysts and managers and directors in ⁢each‍ of the operational areas – ​so we understand what’s happening in revenue cycle,‍ in the pharmacy, in the lab, in radiology, in ‌nursing, and with our⁢ providers,​ both on the ambulatory and acute ‌side. We have to⁤ truly understand ‍how the​ technology is impacting the operations of the entire organization.”
