What is the Ballon d’Or? A Brief History
The Ballon d’Or (“golden Ball”) was first awarded in 1956 by France Football magazine. Initially, it recognised the best European player, but in 1995, the eligibility criteria expanded to include all players regardless of their nationality, provided that they were playing for a European club.
For many years, the award was decided by a jury of football journalists. However, the voting process has been refined over time. Today, it involves a panel of journalists representing FIFA-affiliated nations, with a weighted voting system. The weight given to each journalist’s vote is based on the ranking of their country in the FIFA world rankings.
