Dhaka is currently hosting Pakistan’s Commerce Minister, Jam kamal Khan, as the two nations explore increased industrial collaboration. This renewed focus on economic ties marks a significant shift, particularly given the complex history between pakistan and Bangladesh, which was once part of Pakistan before achieving independence following a tumultuous civil war.
For years, Bangladesh maintained close alignment with India, especially during the tenure of former Prime minister Sheikh Hasina. However, following a change in government last year, a noticeable warming of relations with Pakistan has emerged, evidenced by a surge in trade exceeding $1 billion and broader improvements in bilateral relations.
Commerce Minister Khan, who was welcomed in Dhaka by Bangladesh’s Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin, expressed his enthusiasm for engaging with Bangladeshi officials and business leaders. Discussions between Khan and Bangladesh’s Adviser for Industries, Adilur Rahman khan, centered on leveraging both economies to address critical issues like food security and enhancing value addition within the food industry. A key focus was aligning industrial technology to foster innovation and efficiency.
Both sides emphasized the importance of knowledge sharing and the potential for mutual growth through delegation exchanges and collaborative projects. Minister Khan underscored Pakistan’s desire to participate in bangladesh’s expanding industrial sector through joint ventures and investment.

Bangladesh’s Adviser Rahman highlighted the country’s advancements in industrial advancement and its growing needs, expressing strong interest in collaborative opportunities.Specific sectors identified for potential partnership include:

Pakistan also expressed appreciation for Bangladesh’s success in pharmaceuticals, textiles, and data technology, signaling a desire to learn from and possibly collaborate within these thriving industries.
High-Level Visits Signal commitment
The momentum is expected to continue with a planned visit by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, to Dhaka on august 23, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune. He is scheduled to meet with Bangladesh Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain on August 24 to further discuss strengthening coordination between the two countries.
This increased diplomatic engagement follows a recent agreement, reached last month, to grant visa-free entry to holders of diplomatic and official passports, a significant step forward in improving bilateral relations, brokered by Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Bangladesh’s Home Minister Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.
