Bangladesh Measles Outbreak: Rising Deaths & Vaccination Efforts

A measles outbreak in Bangladesh has resulted in at least 38 confirmed deaths this year, prompting the government to launch an emergency nationwide immunization campaign. The outbreak, concentrated in areas like Dhaka, Mymensingh, Chapainawabganj, Pabna, Natore, and Rajshahi, has raised concerns about declining vaccination rates and the vulnerability of children.

As of Wednesday, April 1, 2026, officials confirmed 15 deaths directly linked to measles infection after laboratory testing of 33 samples, with support from the World Health Organization. However, other reports indicate the death toll has reached 38, including deaths from complications related to the disease. Health Services Division Secretary Kamruzzaman Chowdhury stated that the confirmed deaths stemmed from laboratory tests.

The government plans to begin the immunization drive on Sunday, prioritizing high-risk areas. The vaccination age has been lowered to six months, instead of nine, in an effort to reach more vulnerable infants. This decision comes as health authorities have observed a surge in cases, with at least 674 measles cases reported across the country this year.

Measles: A Highly Contagious Disease

Measles is described as one of the most infectious pathogens, requiring a 95% vaccination rate within a population to prevent its spread. The virus spreads through respiratory droplets released when an infected person breathes, coughs, or sneezes. Initial symptoms often resemble a common cold, followed by a distinctive rash that typically starts on the face and behind the ears, then spreads across the body in blotchy, raised patches.

Health officials warn that unvaccinated children or those who have not completed the two-dose measles schedule are at the greatest risk. Malnourished children are particularly susceptible to severe complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis.

Global Rise in Measles Cases

The outbreak in Bangladesh is part of a broader global trend of increasing measles cases, linked to declining vaccination rates. While vaccination rates have recently begun to rise in some areas, with parents rushing to immunize their children, pediatric hospital wards have been overwhelmed in certain locations.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed concern over the spread of measles to 56 districts within Bangladesh, highlighting the urgency of the vaccination campaign.

Government Response and Preparedness

Bangladesh’s Health Minister has affirmed the government’s full preparedness to prevent the spread of measles, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming vaccination drive. The campaign will focus on densely populated urban areas, where the risk of transmission is highest.

Health authorities have also stepped up surveillance and case-tracking efforts, particularly in the northwestern Rajshahi region, which has been heavily affected by the outbreak. The government is working to ensure that all children receive the necessary vaccinations to protect them from this highly contagious disease.
