Context: Political Upheaval and Trials
A Dhaka court on Thursday sentenced a former minister to three years in prison following a series of anti-corruption cases filed earlier this year. A junior officer from the ministry was acquitted. The proceedings occurred amidst heightened security and followed a recent death sentence handed down by a special Bangladeshi tribunal to former Prime Minister Hasina on charges of “crimes against humanity.”
The corruption Cases and Verdict
the Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed six cases between January 12 and January 14, 2024, and submitted charge-sheets in all of them on March 10, 2024. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday, November 19, 2024, concerning three of those cases. Only one of the accused appeared in person for the trial and received the three-year sentence.
Hasina’s Death Sentence and Political Transition
On November 17, 2024, the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) sentenced Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan kamal to death for alleged “crimes against humanity.” Hasina is currently residing in India, and Kamal is reportedly hiding there as well. This sentencing follows a period of significant political instability.
Hasina’s Awami League government was overthrown on August 5, 2024, by a student-led protest known as the ‘July Uprising.’
Three days later,on August 8,2024,Nobel Peace Prize laureate Muhammad Yunus accepted the role of chief advisor to an interim government formed in response to the protests, arriving in Dhaka from Paris.
Security Measures and Regional Implications
Authorities considerably increased security around the court complex in the old part of Dhaka in anticipation of the verdict. This heightened security reflects the sensitivity of the cases and the potential for unrest, especially given the recent death sentence against Hasina.
