Bangladeshi police detained around 290 supporters of the left-wing Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal party during a September 26 meeting in Dhaka. The mass arrest stems from allegations by the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s youth wing, the Jubo Dal, that the gathering was a secret meeting of the banned Awami League party led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Court Remands 27 Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal Supporters Over Alleged Slogans
Following the police raid in Dhaka, a court remanded 27 of the detained individuals to custody. Authorities alleged that these specific participants chanted the slogan Joy Bangla, a phrase associated with the Awami League. The Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal was part of a 14-party alliance led by the Awami League, which governed the country from 2009 until 2024, when it was toppled by student-led protests.
Security Forces Target Alleged Awami League Gatherings Across Multiple Cities
The crackdown on the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal coincided with simultaneous police operations targeting suspected Awami League loyalists in other parts of the country. On September 26, police in Barisal detained 12 activists on accusations of holding a secret meeting to plan sabotage. Two days later, authorities in Dhaka arrested 15 additional individuals under the Anti-Terrorism Act on similar allegations. Those detained in both Barisal and Dhaka said they had gathered to mark Sheikh Hasina’s birthday.
Human Rights Concerns Grow Over Crackdown on Political Opposition
During Sheikh Hasina’s rule, there were widespread and grave rights violations—including extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, torture, and the arbitrary detention of political opponents. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party came to power promising to restore the rule of law and human rights. Instead, the current government has detained hundreds of Awami League members, mostly without charge, while rolling back human rights safeguards proposed by the interim government.

International Standards Guaranteed Despite Past Political Abuses
International human rights law guarantees freedoms of expression and association for all. Past violations committed when the Awami League was in power do not justify the current government’s violations of the same rights. Authorities continue to hold hundreds of Awami League members in jail as police raids persist across Bangladesh.
