Md Farhan Israk is reportedly close to Jasimuddin Rahmani, the head of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), an Al-Qaeda affiliate in the Indian subcontinent.
“It’s a major move against jihadi elements,” Assam Special Director General of Police (DGP) Harmeet Singh told NDTV. “We managed to nip this in the bud with the help of central agencies and the West Bengal and Kerala Police. This is a success, and we will continue to pursue this further.”
The STF, led by IPS officer Partha Sarathi Mahanta, conducted simultaneous raids in Kerala, West Bengal, and Assam on the night of December 17-18, apprehending the eight suspects.
“Thes arrests prove the apprehensions about the situation in Bangladesh having some effect in our country,” Singh said. “Their plans were a lot larger than just Assam and Bengal. They were planning violent and subversive activities, assassinations, to disrupt communal harmony, and destabilize the region.”
The other seven arrested individuals are: Minarul Sheikh, 40; Md Abbas Ali, 33; Nur Islam Mandal, 40; Abdul Karim Mandal, 30; Mojibar Rahman, 46; Hamidul Islam, 34; and Enamul Haque, 29.
According to the STF, nur Islam Mandal and Mazibur Rahman traveled extensively across west Bengal, attempting to recruit youth to join terrorist organizations like ABT and AQIS.
Meetings were held in Murshidabad and Falakata, where they allegedly discussed targeting RSS members and other Hindu groups, with the aim of inciting religious tensions and disrupting communal harmony.
The arrests highlight the ongoing threat of transnational terrorism and the importance of inter-state cooperation in countering such threats.
