Milan, Italy – A failed bank robbery took a bizarre turn on Thursday when a 24-year-old man found himself locked inside the UniCredit bank vault on Viale Certosa for nine hours. The incident, which unfolded overnight, resulted in the man’s arrest on suspicion of attempted aggravated theft, but not before a lengthy and unusual standoff with authorities.

According to police reports, the Bangladeshi national entered the bank during regular business hours with the intention of robbing safety deposit boxes. Surveillance footage captured him attempting to pry open multiple boxes within the vault area. When his efforts proved unsuccessful, he reportedly resigned himself to his situation, sitting on the floor and waiting for assistance.

The situation escalated after the bank closed for the night. Private security personnel detected the intruder on surveillance cameras and alerted the police. However, access to the vault was immediately hampered by a timed lockbox securing the keys – programmed to reopen only at 8:00 a.m. The following morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene around 9:00 p.m. But were unable to immediately retrieve the keys. Firefighters spent nearly nine hours attempting to override the timed lock and gain access to the vault. The operation required specialized equipment and a significant commitment of resources.

“It took firefighters nearly nine hours to force the safe open, recovering both the robber, the keys and the vault,” a police statement confirmed. Two ambulance crews were also present at the scene, assessing the man’s condition. He was found to be in good health, despite his prolonged confinement, and was subsequently transported to a hospital for observation.

The Carabinieri Mobile Radio Unit formally arrested the suspect, initiating an investigation to determine how he managed to gain access to the vault and became trapped. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage to piece together the sequence of events and understand any potential security lapses.

UniCredit released a statement confirming the attempted break-in, emphasizing that the bank’s alarm systems functioned correctly and that emergency services were contacted immediately. The bank also stated that security procedures were in place to protect both the stored assets and the intruder during the incident.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by financial institutions in securing their premises against increasingly audacious, and sometimes remarkably inept, criminal activity. While the would-be robber’s plan ultimately failed, the prolonged standoff and the resources required to resolve the situation underscore the potential disruption caused by even poorly executed heists.

The case echoes other unusual bank robbery attempts documented in recent years. In Germany, a group of thieves were caught on camera calmly paying for parking after robbing a bank, a detail that garnered significant media attention. The thieves were filmed meticulously feeding coins into a parking meter, even lifting the barrier for accomplices, demonstrating a peculiar level of consideration amidst their criminal act.

The Father’s Day bank massacre in Denver, Colorado, in 1991, stands as a stark contrast to the Milan incident. That event, which resulted in four deaths and the theft of approximately $200,000, remains unsolved despite the arrest and subsequent acquittal of a former police officer. The 1991 robbery serves as a reminder of the potential for violence and the lasting impact of bank heists on victims and communities.

While the Milan incident concluded without violence, it raises questions about bank security protocols and the vulnerabilities that can be exploited by determined, albeit unsuccessful, criminals. The investigation is expected to focus on identifying any weaknesses in the bank’s security measures and implementing improvements to prevent similar incidents in the future. The suspect remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
