The Mexican peso advanced against the United States dollar on Tuesday, driven by growing market appetite for risk assets following reports that Iran is reviewing a peace proposal with the United States, according to financial reports.
The spot exchange rate stood at 17.2844 pesos per dollar during the morning session, representing a gain of 7.50 centavos, or 0.43 percent, compared with the previous official rate of 17.3594 registered by the Banco de México, or Banxico. The US Dollar Index, tracked by the Intercontinental Exchange against a basket of six currencies, dropped 0.06 percent to 99.14 units.
Market Reactions and Geopolitical Factors
According to a note from Monex Grupo Financiero, the local currency gained ground as the greenback retreated while operators raised expectations for a temporary resolution to the geopolitical conflict in the Middle East. Iranian media outlets reported earlier that Iran is reviewing a proposal for a peace agreement with the United States.
In contrast to the trading session on Tuesday, the foreign exchange market experienced closure during a prior holiday, where rates from LSEG showed the peso moving near 17.7795 per dollar. During that earlier span, US President Donald Trump had threatened consequences over the Strait of Hormuz before diplomatic channels involving Pakistan advanced a potential ceasefire framework aimed at halting hostilities immediately and establishing peace talks within 20 days.
Economic Data and Remittance Flows
Beyond international headlines, markets monitored domestic economic releases and upcoming US employment figures, including the JOLTS job openings report for April, which influences Federal Reserve monetary policy expectations. Banxico reported that foreign remittances totaled 4,978 million dollars in April, marking a 3.7 percent annual increase compared with 2025 across 12.4 million transactions.
Prevemos que las remesas mantengan una tendencia de recuperación en lo que resta del año, aunque con volatilidad. Estimamos un incremento de 3% en 2026 frente a la caída de 4.6% del año pasado
Banamex analysts stated in a report. Banxico’s upcoming monetary policy announcement remains a primary focus for the exchange rate for the remainder of the week.
