South Charente Hospitals to Enhance Breast Cancer Screening with New Ultrasound Machine

Hospitals in South Charente will receive a second, state-of-the-art ultrasound machine dedicated solely to breast cancer screening, thanks to a €23,000 donation from the Charentais committee of the League against Cancer. The new equipment, expected to arrive in December, will streamline the screening process and reduce the need for patients to return for additional check-ups, according to Romain Labrouquaire, director of the South Charente hospitals.
The total cost of the ultrasound machine is €53,000, with the League against Cancer covering between 40% and 60% of the expense. Doctor Jean-Pierre Dupuychaffray, president of the Charente committee of the League against Cancer, noted this is the first time the League has directly funded equipment for a local hospital, emphasizing their commitment to improving access to screening, particularly as delays are currently longer in Angoulême and Soyaux.
Addressing Increasing cancer Rates
The new ultrasound machine will be equipped with a blood flow analysis module, enabling more accurate image interpretation. doctors Hanitra Razafindrahaingo and Rosette Randriamahazaka highlighted the importance of this feature, given the increasing incidence of breast cancer, especially among younger women. In 2024, the two doctors performed 2,550 mammograms at the Barbezieux hospital.
Currently,wait times for screening in Barbezieux remain reasonable,around five months,with priority access available for urgent cases.
