Updated June 16, 2025
A final performance from Los Angeles comedian Ken Flores, who died earlier this year, is now available to audiences. Hulu premiered two episodes of Hartbeat’s “LOL Live” on June 6, featuring Flores and daphnique Springs.
Flores, only 28, passed away during his “Butterfly Effect” tour due to congestive heart failure. The “LOL Live” special marks his first and last filmed performance.
Jeff Clanagan, president and chief distribution officer of Hartbeat, Kevin Hart’s entertainment company, said the special captures Flores’ unique ability to connect through genuine storytelling. Hartbeat produced the program.
Born in Chicago and raised in Aurora, Illinois, Flores began honing his stand-up in Chicago clubs like the laugh Factory and Zanies. He gained traction on TikTok and Instagram, sharing snippets of his self-deprecating humor, often centered on his weight and Mexican heritage. His unique comedic role quickly gained attention.
Gabriel Iglesias noticed Flores’ talent and invited him to open for his 2023 “Don’t Worry Be Fluffy Tour” in Chicago.
Iglesias remembered Flores as kind and respectful, noting the presence of Flores’ family among the 15,000 attendees that night. Flores also toured with Jo Koy and Felipe Esparza.
After moving to Los Angeles in 2023, Flores built a following at clubs like the Hollywood Laugh Factory, the Comedy Store, the HaHa, and the Hollywood Improv.
Rene Vaca and Ralph Barbosa, fellow Latino comedians, considered Flores a close friend.
Barbosa said Flores’ authenticity stood out. “Ken never kissed anybody’s ass, which made me respect him more, because that means everything that he got was through talent and hard work,” Barbosa said.
Vaca recalled a memorable dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Los Angeles.”Ken was always trying to reach for the orange chicken, but every time he reached for it, [the table] kept spinning away from him,” Vaca said.
barbosa also remembered their last performance together at the Hollywood Improv on Jan. 21,a week before Flores’ death. “We had some drinks in us, we had the piano, we were improvising songs … Rene fell on the ground trying to pants Ken,” Barbosa said.
Vaca added, “It was as if the universe gave us our chance to have that moment with Ken before he left us, you know?”
Vaca has watched the Hulu special, praising Flores’ delivery. Barbosa, however, has only seen snippets, admitting, “ I just don’t want it to be over, you know?”
Vaca and Barbosa are continuing their planned national tour, now named “The Butterfly Effect,” in honor of flores. They are splitting the profits three ways, including Flores’ family. The tour highlights the important role Flores played in their lives.
During each show, they play a 15-minute segment of Flores’ unreleased material. “He’s still killing it in the audience,” Vaca said.
What’s next
Vaca and Barbosa will continue “The Butterfly Effect” tour, ensuring Flores’ comedic voice continues to reach audiences and support his family.
