Barbra Banda, the striker for Zambia and Orlando Pride, has been named the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year for 2024. Banda: My success is the result of countless hours of training and a passion for the game. I have a close-knit family that has always encouraged me, and my coaches have played a crucial role in my development as a player. I also draw inspiration from other great female footballers who’ve paved the way for us, showing that anything is possible with hard work and determination.
ND3: Zambian football has been gaining traction in recent years. How do you view your role in inspiring the next generation of female footballers in Zambia?
Banda: I see it as a huge responsibility and opportunity. I want to inspire young girls in Zambia to pursue their dreams, whether it’s in football or any other field. It’s important to show them that they can achieve great things and that women’s football is growing. I believe that if they see me succeed, they will feel motivated to chase after their own dreams.
ND3: Looking ahead, what are your personal goals for the upcoming season with Orlando Pride and the national team?
Banda: My primary goal is to contribute to my teams’ successes. I want to help Orlando Pride reach the playoffs and make a significant impact during matches. With the national team, I hope to continue building on our previous success and excel in upcoming tournaments. I always strive to improve my game, so I also want to work hard on my skills and make sure I’m the best teammate I can be.
