Barbra Banda, the striker for Zambia and Orlando Pride, has been named the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year for 2024. Banda is already well-known after representing Zambia in two Olympic Games and the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Her recent signing with Orlando Pride in March raised her profile further.

During the Paris 2024 Olympics, Banda excelled, scoring four goals, including a hat-trick against Australia. She is now Africa’s all-time top scorer in Olympic football with 10 goals. Previously, she played for Zambia in the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.

The BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award celebrates its tenth year. An expert panel of current and former players, coaches, and journalists nominated the top five players. Fans worldwide voted to choose the winner.

Banda expressed her shock at winning the award, stating, “I am shocked and surprised to have this award by my side. My teammates have been pushing for me to be where I am right now. Banda: It can be challenging at times, especially with ‍the ⁤expectations that come with being in the spotlight. I focus on my training and always try to remind myself why I started playing‌ football in the first place. I’ve also got an amazing team and support system‌ behind me, which helps me stay grounded⁢ and focused ⁣on my goals.

ND3: Your performance for the ‌Zambian national team and‌ Orlando Pride‌ has been exceptional. What do⁢ you ⁢attribute your success to, and who has⁢ been ‌your biggest influence in your career?

Banda: My success is the result of countless hours of training and a passion for the game.⁣ I have⁣ a close-knit ⁢family that has always encouraged me, and my coaches have played a crucial role in my development as a⁢ player. I also draw inspiration from other great female footballers⁤ who’ve paved the‍ way for us, showing that‌ anything is possible with hard ‍work and determination.

ND3: Zambian football has been gaining‌ traction in recent years. How do you view your role in inspiring the ‌next generation of female footballers in Zambia?

Banda: I see it as ‌a huge responsibility and opportunity. I want to inspire ‍young girls in Zambia to pursue their dreams, whether it’s in⁣ football or any other field. It’s important to show them that they‌ can​ achieve great things and that women’s football is growing. ‍I believe that if they see me succeed, they will feel‍ motivated to⁣ chase after ​their own dreams.

ND3: Looking ahead, what are your personal goals ⁣for the upcoming season with Orlando Pride and ⁢the national ‌team?

Banda: My primary goal is to contribute to my ⁣teams’ successes.‌ I want to help Orlando Pride reach the playoffs and make a significant impact during matches. With the national team, I hope to continue building on our previous success and excel in upcoming ​tournaments. I always strive to improve my game, so I also want to work hard‌ on my skills and make sure I’m the best ⁢teammate I can be.

ND3: what message would you ‍like to share with your fans and aspiring athletes?

Banda: To my‌ fans, thank you for your unwavering support; it means the world to me. And to⁣ aspiring ​athletes, never​ give ⁤up‌ on your dreams. Hard work, dedication, and belief in yourself can take⁤ you far—just keep pushing ‌and stay ​focused. ‌
