Britain’s Cameron Norrie was eliminated from the Barcelona Open in the quarter-finals on April 17, 2026, losing in straight sets to Rafael Jodar of Spain. The defeat came at the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona, where Norrie, the world No. 24 at the time, failed to break through against a resurgent Jodar, who secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory in one hour and 42 minutes.

Norrie, who had reached the quarter-finals in Barcelona the previous year, entered the match aiming to build on a solid clay-court season that included a semi-final appearance in Munich. However, he struggled with consistency on serve, facing five break points across the two sets and converting only one of his own three opportunities. Jodar, ranked world No. 38, dictated play from the baseline with heavy topspin forehands and reduced his unforced errors significantly compared to earlier rounds.

The first set saw Jodar break Norrie in the seventh game to take a 4-3 lead, then hold serve to love in the eighth before closing it out with another break in the ninth. Norrie managed to save two set points in that game but could not prevent Jodar from serving out the set to love. In the second set, Norrie broke back early to lead 2-1, but Jodar responded immediately with a break of his own to level at 2-2. From there, Jodar won four of the next five games, including a crucial hold to love in the eighth game after saving two break points, to seal the match.

Speaking after the match, Jodar acknowledged the challenge posed by Norrie’s experience and variety. “He makes you work for every point,” Jodar said in his on-court interview. “I had to stay patient and trust my game, especially on the bigger points. It’s not easy to come here and play someone who’s been in the top 20 for so long.” Norrie, meanwhile, cited difficulties in adapting his rhythm to the slower conditions. “The ball wasn’t coming through as quickly as I’d hoped,” he said. “I wasn’t able to impose my game plan, and Rafa made me pay for every short ball.”

The result marks Norrie’s earliest exit at the Barcelona Open since 2022, ending his bid to defend the ranking points he earned from a semi-final run in 2025. With the loss, he drops to No. 26 in the ATP Race to Turin standings, complicating his qualification hopes for the season-ending finals. Jodar, advances to his first ATP 500 semi-final since 2023, where he will face either top seed Carlos Alcaraz or qualifier Pedro Martínez, depending on the outcome of their respective matches.

Norrie’s campaign on European clay continues next week at the Mutua Madrid Open, where he is scheduled to play his opening match against a qualifier. Jodar, buoyed by the win, will look to carry momentum into the semi-finals as he seeks his first tour-level title on clay. Both players remain entered in the doubles draw at their respective upcoming events, though neither has confirmed participation as of the evening of April 17.
