Barcelona’s pursuit of the La Liga title hit a significant snag on Monday night, falling to Girona 2-1 in a match that saw Real Madrid reclaim the league lead. The defeat raises serious questions about Barcelona’s consistency and, particularly, the form of key players like Robert Lewandowski.

The match unfolded at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, with Girona entering the contest firmly entrenched in the relegation battle, holding just a two-point advantage over 18th-placed Mallorca. Barcelona, fresh off a heavy 0-4 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal, were looking to respond and regain top spot after Real Madrid’s convincing 4-1 win over Real Sociedad on Saturday.

Hansi Flick made a notable change to his starting lineup, opting for Ferran Torres over Lewandowski, who began the match on the bench alongside goalkeeper Wojciech Szczęsny. Despite a lively first half featuring chances for both sides – including a missed penalty from Lamine Yamal – the teams went into the break scoreless. Raphinha, Yamal and Torres all had opportunities, while Joan Garcia proved solid in goal for Girona.

The deadlock was broken shortly after the hour mark when Pau Cubarsí scored for Barcelona. However, Girona responded almost immediately through Thomas Lamar, leveling the score and injecting renewed energy into the home side.

Lewandowski was introduced in the 73rd minute, tasked with providing a spark, but it was Girona who ultimately found the winning goal. Fran Beltran put the hosts ahead in the 87th minute, and a late goal from Lewandowski was ruled offside, sealing Barcelona’s fate.

The result leaves Real Madrid two points clear at the summit of La Liga. Barcelona will need to regroup quickly, with Levante visiting Camp Nou next week.

Player Assessments: A Night to Forget for Several Barca Stars

Catalan sports daily Sport offered a critical assessment of Barcelona’s performance, singling out Ferran Torres for particular scrutiny. Despite his work rate, Torres received a rating of just 4 out of 10, with the report noting a lack of impact and a tendency to dwell on the ball. Lewandowski also received a 4, described as “weak” and failing to alter the course of the match despite his late introduction. The report highlighted missed opportunities and a general lack of effectiveness.

Mundo Deportivo echoed this sentiment, acknowledging Lewandowski’s continued reliability in the penalty area but ultimately deeming his performance average. The publication noted his involvement in the disallowed goal but criticized his overall contribution. Torres again faced criticism, described as lacking space and struggling to maintain possession.

Spanish publication AS delivered a particularly blunt assessment of Lewandowski’s display, labeling it “slow and without ideas,” describing his form as “worrying.” The report also pointed to the struggles of Torres, noting that Lewandowski’s own form has been equally concerning. “The shark hasn’t been biting for some time. He’s stuck and can’t regain his form. The problem is that his replacement, Lewandowski, isn’t in his best form either,” the publication stated.

The defeat for Barcelona is not only a blow to their title aspirations but also raises questions about the team’s overall performance and the effectiveness of Hansi Flick’s tactics. The upcoming match against Levante will be a crucial test of Barcelona’s resolve and their ability to bounce back from this disappointing result. The pressure is mounting on Flick and his players to deliver a response and reignite their title challenge.

Barcelona’s next challenge comes against Levante, with Real Madrid traveling to Osasuna on Saturday. The title race is heating up, and Barcelona will need to find a way to rediscover their form if they hope to stay in contention.
