Barcelona to Sign Goalkeeper Joan García in €25M Deal
Updated June 13, 2025
Barcelona is poised to acquire goalkeeper Joan García from Espanyol after triggering his €25 million release clause. The transfer, pending LaLiga validation, is expected to finalize in the coming days.
García, 24, has reportedly agreed to a six-year contract, committing him to Barcelona until 2031. His role will be to strengthen the team’s goalkeeping options, which already include Marc-André Ter Stegen and Iñaki Peña.
The move comes despite reported interest from several Premier League clubs. Arsenal reportedly pursued García last summer, while Manchester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, and Bournemouth were linked to him this year. Ultimately, Barcelona won the race for the talented goalkeeper.
Espanyol, while reluctant to lose García to their local rivals, were powerless to prevent the transfer due to the release clause in his contract.
García, a Catalonia native, joined Espanyol’s youth setup in 2016 and debuted for the first team in 2021. He played a key role in Espanyol’s promotion to LaLiga in 2024 and featured in all 38 league games this past season. His performances included a standout showing in a 1-0 victory against real Madrid in February.
