Barcelona’s Monaco Mishap: Xavi Sounds the Alarm, Calls for Swift Recovery
Monaco Secures First Champions League Win Against Barcelona
Monaco suffered their first defeat of the season to Barcelona at Stade Louis II in the Emirates on Thursday in the first round of the European Champions League competition.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said he was not worried about his team’s performance despite the defeat against Monaco, as the latter took advantage of their numerical superiority and scored twice after Barcelona defender Eric Garcia was sent off after just 11 minutes of the match. Goals through Magnes Akliush and George Illnikina.
Focus on the Upcoming Conflict
Flick, who has led Barcelona to five consecutive victories in the Spanish league, remained positive after his first defeat with the team and urged his players to forget about it and focus on the upcoming clash.
Flick told reporters: “After Garcia was sent off, the game changed completely, but I tried to attack as a team, but they deserved to win.”
He added: “I told the players to keep their heads up because they are disappointed, but we have to focus on Sunday’s match (the Spanish league match against Villarreal), which is our next match. It’s recovery time, and I hope the players will come back with a lot of energy.”
He continued: “We have players who gave more than 100% of their effort. Every player tried to give his best in this match. I am very proud of this team, but we have to accept defeat today.”
The Optimistic Barcelona Coach
Flick played down Barcelona’s struggles in the Champions League and said he felt optimistic about his side’s chances at the tournament, which they last won in 2015.
The former Bayern Munich coach added: “We all saw that what happened when we got the red card after only 11 minutes changed the course of the match, but we have to accept these things because they happen often in football.”
He said: “But we are strong enough to perform well in the Champions League. We have seven games in front of us and I think we will win a lot of games.”
According to Opta Stats Network, Barcelona have conceded in 12 of their last 26 matches played in the Champions League, or 46.2%.
With this result, Monaco earned its first 3 points, placing it in 13th place, while Barcelona is in 23rd place without points.
