Paramount Acquires The Free Press, Bari Weiss Named Editor-in-Chief of CBS News

What Happened?

Today, October 6, 2023, paramount officially announced its acquisition of Bari Weiss’s The Free Press. Concurrently,Weiss was named editor-in-Chief of CBS News.

Paramount CEO David Ellison announced the news in a note to all staffers, which was obtained by CNN. In the note, Ellison stated that Weiss “brings a passion for reaching broad audiences through rigorous, fact-based reporting and a relentless commitment to amplifying voices from all corners of the spectrum.”

The new editor-in-chief’s responsibilities include shaping editorial priorities, championing core values across CBS News’ various platforms, and overseeing innovation at the network, with a focus on how it reports and delivers news.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Paramount purchased The Free Press for $150 million. The Free press will continue to operate as an independent brand.

“I am confident that, in the coming years, CBS News and The Free Press will make big strides and be at the forefront of a much-needed transformation in how news is gathered, reported, and delivered,” Ellison wrote in the note.
