Canucks Connection:
The Barracuda start a five-game homestand against the Abbotsford Canucks. This is the first game of eight this season. Last year, the Barracuda went 1-2-0-1 against the Canucks. At home, they were 0-1-0-1. Historically, the Barracuda’s record against the Canucks is 7-11-1-1, with a home record of 2-6-1-1. Abbotsford has won four consecutive games.
Sunday Funday:
The Barracuda tied their game against Toronto 1-1 in the third period and won in a shootout, 2-1. Danil Gushchin scored the power play goal, and Andrew Poturalski scored in the shootout. Gabe Carriere saved both attempts from the Marlies, achieving 31 saves overall in just his second AHL game.
Sparkling Special Teams:
The Barracuda have the best penalty kill in the AHL at 89.7%. They rank first in shorthanded goals with 5. They have not allowed a shorthanded goal this season. Their power play stands at 13th in the AHL (18.8%), but fourth at home (25%).
Eye Eye Captain:
Jimmy Schuldt was named the team’s sixth captain last week. In his first season with the Barracuda, he previously led the Coachella Valley Firebirds to two Calder Cup Finals. Schuldt was signed by the Vegas Golden Knights in April 2019. The alternate captains are Andrew Poturalski, Lucas Carlsson, Colin White, and Scott Sabourin.
Ask & You Shall Receive:
The Sharks reassigned goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov to the Barracuda. He had a 1-0-1 record with a 1.96 GAA and a .926 SV% during his recall. Askarov won his first game with the Sharks, helping the team defeat the Kings 7-2. He ranks high among AHL goalies in various statistics.
Collin Cookin’:
Rookie Collin Graf is T-fourth in the AHL for scoring (19) and assists (14). He leads all first-year players in assists. Graf was signed by the Sharks after a successful college career at Quinnipiac, where he won a national championship.
Hot Pot:
Andrew Poturalski scored the decisive goal in the shootout on Sunday. He is currently T-sixth in AHL scoring (17 points) and T-fourth in power-play goals (3). Poturalski joined the Sharks after winning two Calder Cups.
Do the Cagn Cagn:
Luca Cagnoni, a 19-year-old defenseman, is T-third in AHL rookie scoring (16 points). He holds a strong position among defensemen in assists and power-play points.
