Barry McGuigan Reflects on Daughter’s Tragic Death: An Emotional Tribute
Former boxing champion Barry McGuigan spoke emotionally about his late daughter, Danika “Nika” McGuigan, on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!. Nika passed away on July 23, 2019, at age 33, just five weeks after doctors diagnosed her with bowel cancer.
Nika had fought cancer before, overcoming leukaemia at age 11 after two years of treatment. McGuigan shared that he had to leave filming The Boxer with Daniel Day-Lewis due to her diagnosis. He recalled, “They thought she wasn’t going to get better but she fought back and she won it.”
His campmates, including Danny Jones and Tulisa Contostavlos, supported him as he shared his pain. Contostavlos told McGuigan that showing vulnerability takes strength and that there are no rules to grieving. McGuigan appreciated their kindness.
He remembered the emotional challenges during Nika’s second fight with cancer, describing it as “hard for weeks in the hospital.” He mentioned Nika never got to see the premiere of her acclaimed film Wildfire, which showcased her talent.
After Nika’s death, the family released a statement expressing their sadness and requesting privacy to grieve. The statement acknowledged her battle with cancer and reflected the family’s deep love for her.
