Bart de Wever on Meeting U.S. Diplomat: “Country’s Hope…

Rubio, De Wever Discuss Trade, NATO Expansion ‌in Brussels Meeting

BRUSSELS — U.S. Secretary of State‌ Marco Rubio met with ⁤belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever ‌this morning to‍ discuss trade disputes, geopolitical⁣ challenges, and the expansion of NATO’s presence ‌in Belgium.

Transatlantic Partnership Focus⁢ of Discussion

Rubio’s⁤ meeting with De Wever concluded ⁢a three-day visit to Belgium. ‍The discussions, held at the Prime⁣ Minister’s office, lasted approximately 40 minutes.

A key point of discussion was the ongoing trade dispute between the United States and ‍the European Union, sparked by increased ​U.S.⁣ tariffs on imported goods. The EU faces a 20% increase in tariffs.

“I expressed the hope of our country​ that​ the unfortunate commercial dispute between the United States⁣ and Europe will soon end. Let⁤ us maintain and strengthen the transatlantic partnership and free trade relations that have ensured the security and prosperity of ‍the Western world throughout recent history,”

De wever emphasized the importance of ⁣continued ⁣dialog between Europe and the United⁢ States, despite disagreements. “Sometimes⁢ there are disagreements‍ between Europe and the United States. I deeply‌ regret the current commercial dispute. However, this head-to-head meeting clearly‌ confirms the commitment‍ of ‌our American allies ​to continue and,⁣ if possible, to​ strengthen their cooperation in the⁤ future,” he stated.

NATO Expansion Project Addressed

The leaders also discussed the planned expansion of the SHAPE NATO⁤ base in Casteau, ⁢Hainaut province.

The ‍project involves constructing two ‍new buildings to accommodate the expansion ⁢of the Atlantic Alliance. The total budget is estimated⁢ at 800⁣ million euros, with the Belgian ‌federal government ​contributing​ up to 155 million‌ euros. De Wever⁢ indicated that this funding proposal‌ would soon be submitted to the Council of‍ Ministers.
