Rubio, De Wever Discuss Trade, NATO Expansion in Brussels Meeting
BRUSSELS — U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever this morning to discuss trade disputes, geopolitical challenges, and the expansion of NATO’s presence in Belgium.
Transatlantic Partnership Focus of Discussion
Rubio’s meeting with De Wever concluded a three-day visit to Belgium. The discussions, held at the Prime Minister’s office, lasted approximately 40 minutes.
A key point of discussion was the ongoing trade dispute between the United States and the European Union, sparked by increased U.S. tariffs on imported goods. The EU faces a 20% increase in tariffs.
“I expressed the hope of our country that the unfortunate commercial dispute between the United States and Europe will soon end. Let us maintain and strengthen the transatlantic partnership and free trade relations that have ensured the security and prosperity of the Western world throughout recent history,”
De wever emphasized the importance of continued dialog between Europe and the United States, despite disagreements. “Sometimes there are disagreements between Europe and the United States. I deeply regret the current commercial dispute. However, this head-to-head meeting clearly confirms the commitment of our American allies to continue and, if possible, to strengthen their cooperation in the future,” he stated.
NATO Expansion Project Addressed
The leaders also discussed the planned expansion of the SHAPE NATO base in Casteau, Hainaut province.
The project involves constructing two new buildings to accommodate the expansion of the Atlantic Alliance. The total budget is estimated at 800 million euros, with the Belgian federal government contributing up to 155 million euros. De Wever indicated that this funding proposal would soon be submitted to the Council of Ministers.
