George Bartlett produced a resilient second-innings performance to secure a draw for Northamptonshire against Lancashire in a Rothesay County Championship Division Two match at Wantage Road on April 6, 2026.
Bartlett scored 95 runs from 197 deliveries, including 12 fours, to thwart a Lancashire bowling attack led by captain Sir Jimmy Anderson.
The match concluded in a draw with Lancashire posting scores of 384 and 194, while Northamptonshire scored 258 in their first innings and finished their second at 213 for nine.
Northamptonshire Collapse
Chasing a notional target of 321 to win, Northamptonshire faced a severe collapse on the final day of the match. Resuming on April 6 at 9 for one, the batting side struggled against constant pressure, falling to 63 for six by the lunch interval.
Tom Bailey provided early breakthroughs for Lancashire, claiming two wickets in three balls during a seven-over opening spell that conceded only six runs and included five maidens. Harry Conway was caught at fourth slip by Tom Hartley, while Calvin Harrison was dismissed when the ball hit off-stump.
George Balderson and Ajeet Singh Dale maintained the pressure throughout the morning, while left-arm spinner Tom Hartley provided control from over the wicket later in the day.
Bartlett’s Rear-Guard Action
Bartlett began a recovery from the precarious lunch-time deficit, forming a 72-run partnership for the seventh wicket with James Sales, who contributed 24 runs.

He further stabilized the innings with a 57-run stand for the eighth wicket alongside Lewis McManus, who scored 27 runs over the course of 32 overs.
Despite the resistance, Lancashire captain Sir Jimmy Anderson continued to find success, finishing with figures of 3 for 45.
Anderson Milestone and Final Stand
During a tense final session featuring a packed infield, Sir Jimmy Anderson achieved a significant personal milestone by claiming his 400th first-class wicket for Lancashire.
The milestone wicket left Northamptonshire reeling at 181 for nine. However, Bartlett remained the anchor of the innings, showing composure to steer the side toward safety.
Bartlett was joined by Ben Sanderson for the final wicket, and the pair shared an unbroken partnership of 32 runs. Lancashire had previously missed an opportunity to end the match sooner after dropping Sanderson in the slips early in his innings.
The partnership ensured Northamptonshire reached 213 for nine, securing the draw and preventing a Lancashire victory in the opening round of the competition.
