Stabbing in Basel: Man Injured, Woman in Custody
A man was stabbed in Basel, Switzerland, on Sunday afternoon while walking with a two-month-old baby, according to a statement from the Basel Public Prosecutor’s Office. Fortunately, the infant was unharmed.
The incident occurred around 1:00 PM in the Gundeldingerstrasse area of the city. Authorities say the suspect approached the man and stabbed him with a knife. Several bystanders intervened and were able to detain the woman until police arrived.
The injured man was transported to a hospital for treatment. His condition has not been released.
Police have arrested a 51-year-old Turkish national in connection with the attack. The Public Prosecutor’s Office stated that further details are being withheld at this time due to ongoing investigative efforts.
“The exact sequence of events and the motive for the attack are the subject of an ongoing investigation,” the Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement.

This incident comes amid a recent spate of stabbings reported globally. On February 5, 2026, a 28-year-old man was charged with assault for allegedly stabbing a 51-year-old man in New York City. More recently, on February 20, 2026, a man was stabbed in the back near John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and on the same day, Argenis Baez was sentenced to 24 years in prison for the 2022 killing of his ex-wife, an NYPD officer. Other stabbing incidents reported in February 2026 include an American tourist stabbed to death in Bangkok, and a father accused of stabbing his three-month-old son and leaving him in the snow.
In a separate incident reported on Thursday, February 18, 2026, a 75-year-old woman was arrested in Basel on suspicion of fatally stabbing a seven-year-old boy. According to police, the woman turned herself in to authorities. The boy was reportedly walking home from school when he was attacked. He died later in hospital. The motive for that attack remains under investigation.
