Sharon Stone has shared detailed accounts of the professional and personal toll associated with her breakout role in the 1992 erotic thriller Basic Instinct. While the film propelled her to global stardom, Stone has highlighted a significant gender pay gap and a devastating legal battle over the custody of her son.
The Gender Pay Gap in Basic Instinct
During the 43rd annual New York Women in Film & Television (NYWIFT) Muse Awards, Stone addressed the disparity in compensation between herself and her co-star, Michael Douglas. Stone stated that she earned $500,000 for her performance as Catherine Tramell.
In contrast, Stone noted that Michael Douglas was paid $14 million for the same project. She attributed this difference to their respective statuses at the time, noting that Douglas was already a major star with two Academy Awards and credits including Fatal Attraction and Wall Street, while she was relatively unknown despite having appeared in 17 films.
Prior to Basic Instinct, Stone’s most notable work was her role in the 1990 film Total Recall, which was also directed by Paul Verhoeven.
Custody Battle and Systemic Abuse
Beyond the financial disparity, Stone revealed that her role in Basic Instinct had severe consequences in her private life. She stated that she lost custody of her eldest son, Roan, due to the nude scenes in the movie.
Stone described this experience as abuse by the system
, explaining that the nature of her role was used to question her fitness as a parent. She recalled a specific instance during the court proceedings where a judge asked her son if he knew his mother makes sex movies
.
Stone expressed that the loss of custody broke my heart
. This legal battle occurred in the context of her relationship with ex-husband Phil Bronstein.
On-Set Experiences and Professional Humiliation
Stone also recounted a recurring instance of professional disregard during the production of the film. She stated that a line producer mistakenly called her Karen
throughout the entire filming process.
According to Stone, this continued even after the film’s success, extending to the Governor’s Ball following the Oscars. She described the experience as a humiliation that she carried deeply, particularly because her name was not included on the film’s poster.
These revelations come as part of a broader series of reflections Stone has shared over the last year regarding her time on the set of the Verhoeven-directed thriller.
