The drama made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival ahead of its scheduled theatrical release on Sept. 25. Tariq’s film centers on Latif, portrayed by Ali, who is described as a devout Muslim hitman in Texas. Following the sudden death of his wife, Latif fights to protect his children and provide for his newborn baby, navigating a story that moves between family drama and action sequences. According to Polygon, Tariq began writing the script during the pandemic before he got Blade,
crafting the lead role specifically with Ali in mind.
Development and Transition from Marvel Studios
Before collaborating on Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother,
Tariq and Ali worked together on the development of Marvel’s Blade
film. Tariq told Polygon that the two first met in Los Angeles at a vegan restaurant while they were still doing Blade.
When Tariq later left Blade,
he used the resulting pause to return to his self-written script.
The big learning in this for me was… I’m a writer and I love to write,
Tariq told Polygon regarding the transition. And writing this film was so helpful for me with figuring out a lot of things as a parent, as a husband, and so many of the challenges that I had been putting off trying to be a successful filmmaker.
