Tropical Storm Basyang Leaves Trail of Death and Displacement Across the Philippines
At least eight people have been confirmed dead and thousands more displaced as Tropical Storm Basyang (international name: Penha) swept across the Philippines, bringing torrential rains, flooding, and landslides. The storm, which has since weakened into a tropical depression, initially made landfall in Eastern Visayas before crossing to Bohol and impacting Northern Mindanao.
The hardest-hit areas appear to be in Northern Mindanao, where five deaths were reported as of Friday, according to the Philippine News Agency (PNA). In Iligan City, five individuals lost their lives due to the storm’s impact, Inquirer.net reported. Further reports indicate that the death toll has risen to eight across the affected regions.
More than 15,000 families have been forced to evacuate their homes, particularly in the Caraga and Northern Mindanao regions, seeking refuge in evacuation centers as floodwaters inundated communities. The extent of the damage to infrastructure and agriculture is still being assessed.
Basyang made its second landfall over Bohol on Friday morning, according to the state weather bureau, PAGASA. As of 10 a.m. Friday, the storm had weakened into a tropical depression over the Bohol Sea. Despite the weakening, authorities warned of continued rainfall and the risk of further flooding and landslides.
The storm’s path took it across Visayas after initially impacting Mindanao. MSN Philippines reported that Basyang “roars off to Visayas after Mindanao roll,” indicating the storm’s continued movement and potential for further disruption.
The shear line associated with Basyang continues to affect the Philippines, potentially bringing additional rainfall to various regions. Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and heed evacuation orders.
ABS-CBN News reported on February 6, 2026, that Basyang made its second landfall over Bohol. The news organization is committed to public service and promoting Filipino values, continuing to inspire and connect audiences worldwide.
The situation remains fluid, and authorities are working to provide assistance to those affected by the storm. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
