Batman: Knightfall Animated Trilogy in Development at Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. Animation might adapt Batman’s iconic “Knightfall” storyline into an animated trilogy. Industry filings suggest that Jeff Wamester will direct “Batman: Knightfall: Part 1.” Wamester has experience directing DC animated projects, including “Crisis on Infinite Earths.”
The original “Knightfall” was published in April 1993. It consists of three parts: “Knightfall,” “Knightquest,” and “Knightsend.” The story features Bane breaking Batman’s back, leading Jean-Paul Valley (Azrael) to become Batman. Valley’s aggressive methods force Bruce Wayne to reclaim the cowl with help from Robin and Nightwing.
The EIDR filing lists a potential 2024 release and a one-hour runtime, but these details may not be final. The project’s future is uncertain due to changes in DC Studios’ leadership under James Gunn and Peter Safran. They are focusing on a new unified universe, which may affect the status of “Knightfall.”
Butch Lukic, a producer for the “Tomorrowverse,” mentioned that the emphasis is on the James Gunn DC Universe. He stated that any related projects are secondary until the main direction is clear.
The timing of “Knightfall” is noteworthy amid DC’s current project slate. Gunn stressed that a solid screenplay is essential for “Batman: The Brave and the Bold” to move forward. He stated that without a satisfactory story, the film will not be produced.
Warner Bros. typically releases 2-4 animated films each year, indicating continued interest in such projects. “Knightfall” could fit into DC’s “Elseworlds” category, which encompasses stories outside the main timeline. However, with no official announcements at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, fans should manage their expectations. Past corporate restructuring led to the cancellation of other Warner Bros. projects, raising concerns about this adaptation’s fate.
