SHANGHAI – Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), a leading global manufacturer of electric vehicle batteries, showcased its second-generation shenxing ultra-fast charging battery adn other technological advancements at a recent event in Shanghai. The company has also filed for a potential $5 billion initial public offering (IPO) in Hong Kong; the application was accepted on April 10.
Shenxing Battery Boasts Rapid Recharge Capabilities
During the company’s Tech Day, Chief Technology Officer Gao Huan highlighted the Shenxing battery’s capabilities. According to CATL, the battery can add 520 kilometers (approximately 323 miles) of range with just five minutes of charging. Moreover, it can charge from zero to 80% capacity in 15 minutes, even in challenging weather conditions.
CATL anticipates that over 67 new electric vehicle models will incorporate this technology by the end of the year.
Competition Heats Up in Fast-Charging Technology
The unveiling comes amid increasing competition in the electric vehicle battery sector. Last month, BYD revealed its own fast-charging technology, claiming it could provide 400 kilometers (about 249 miles) of range in five minutes, utilizing a peak power of 1,000 kW. This push for innovation among Chinese companies is accelerating the progress of rapid charging solutions.
Naxtra Sodium-Ion Batteries to Enter Mass Production
At the same event, CATL introduced naxtra, a new brand of sodium-ion batteries slated for mass production starting in December. CATL says the Naxtra battery offers an energy density comparable to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Robin Zeng, CATL’s founder and chairman, suggested this new technology could potentially replace up to half of the current LFP battery market, where CATL already holds a significant share.
Sodium-Ion Batteries Offer Potential Advantages
Experts suggest that sodium-ion batteries, in addition to being more economical due to the abundance of sodium, could also reduce the risk of fires in electric vehicles. These batteries have demonstrated zero power degradation at temperatures as low as -40°C (-40°F) and could provide a range of up to 500 kilometers (approximately 310 miles) for electric vehicles.
