Kenta Izumi Seeks Re-election as Representative of Japan’s Largest Opposition Party
Kenta Izumi, the 50-year-old representative of Japan’s largest opposition party, the Cadet Party, announced today that he is seeking re-election. Regarding the overlap during a press conference with Liberal Democratic Party representative Shinjiro Koizumi, Kenta Izumi said, “I want to say let’s get over it.”
Japan’s Fuji News Network (FNN) reported that 43-year-old Party Central Committee member Shinjiro Koizumi held a press conference at the Party Central Committee this morning, thirty minutes after the press conference began. The ruling Liberal Democratic Party also held a press conference to announce his candidacy for the position of President (Party Chairman) of the Liberal Democratic Party.
Kenta Izumi said of the two’s overlapping press conferences and “fighting against each other”, “I will not lose but win. I want to say that Shinjiro Koizumi comes.”
The Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the Constitutional Democratic Party representative election will be announced tomorrow and voting will be held on September 23. Former Representative Yukio Edano, 60, and former Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda, 67, have already announced their candidacies. This means that Kenta Izumi is the third person from the party to announce his participation in the election.
Kenta Izumi said at a press conference today, “I will aim to rotate political parties in the next general election. And I will be at the front,” indicating that he is seeking re-election.
Regarding cooperation with other opposition parties in the next House of Representatives election, Kenta Izumi said that “we will cooperate as much as possible” while he also emphasized on maintaining a balance of the situation. ”We will consider whether the Cadet Party itself can get more seats than the Liberal Democratic Party to govern alone, or whether it can form a coalition government,” he said.
Although Kenta Izumi relied on factions within the party supporting him as his base, he had difficulty gathering endorsers due to some lawmakers’ support for other candidates, so he announced his candidacy just the day before the announcement.
Today, he uses “Japan expansion” as a keyword and expresses six basic principles, including “localization” and “sticking to defense”.
Kenta Izumi’s constituency belongs to Kyoto District 3 of the House of Representatives and is currently serving his 8th term as a member of the House of Representatives.
The Cadet Democratic Party lost the House of Representatives election in 2021. As a result, the then representative Kenta Izumi resigned and took over as a representative of the Cadet Democratic Party in November of the same year.
During Kenta Izumi’s tenure, the Cadet Party lost seats after the 26th Senate election in 2022. However, it won the House of Representatives by-elections in April this year in three seats.
