Battle-Tested: How the Ukraine War is Revolutionizing Allied Military Training
Ukraine War Drives Changes in US Military Training
The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has exposed the vulnerability of command posts to drone attacks and precision strikes. In response, the US military has adapted its training to incorporate new tactics and technologies learned from Ukrainian forces.
During the deployment of the 3rd Infantry Division, which concluded in May, the US military collaborated with the US European Command’s Security Assistance Group-Ukraine team to gain insights into Ukrainian combat operations against Russian forces. This knowledge was then shared with other units preparing for deployment to Europe, enabling them to develop battle scenarios that integrated cable-guided drones and electromagnetic decoys to protect US forces from enemy targeting.
Deception Tactics to Protect Command Posts
Ukrainian forces have developed innovative tactics to deceive the enemy, including the creation of fake command posts to mislead and disrupt enemy operations. This strategy allows for the destruction of enemy assets while safeguarding actual command positions. US ground forces have adopted this approach, recognizing its potential to enhance operational security.
Countering Drone Threats
The war in Ukraine has driven innovation in counter-drone technologies, with both Ukrainian and Russian forces employing various mechanisms to protect soldiers, vehicles, and tanks from drone attacks. These measures include the installation of iron grills or rubber plates on vehicles to deflect or absorb drone strikes.
