Luis Diaz Suspended for Three Champions League Matches
Red Card Leads to Ban
Bayern Munich forward Luis Diaz will miss upcoming Champions League matches after receiving a three-game ban from UEFA for a dangerous tackle on Paris St-Germain’s Achraf Hakimi on November 4, 2023. The incident occurred during Bayern’s 2-1 victory over the defending champions.
The tackle resulted in a severely sprained left ankle for Hakimi, who has not played since. UEFA determined Diaz’s challenge constituted “serious rough play.”
Affected Matches
Diaz will be unavailable for Bayern’s match against Arsenal on November 26, 2023, as well as home fixtures against Sporting on December 9, 2023, and Union Saint-Gilloise on January 21, 2024. This ban exceeds the one-match suspension anticipated by Bayern manager Vincent Kompany on November 17, 2023.
Champions League Standings and Diaz’s Performance
Despite the suspension, Bayern Munich currently leads Champions League Group A with 12 points after four games, tied with Arsenal and Inter Milan on points but ahead on goal difference as of November 17, 2023.
Diaz has been a key contributor for Bayern this season, scoring three goals in four Champions League appearances since joining from Liverpool in the summer transfer window. He has also netted six goals in 10 Bundesliga matches.
