Bayern Munich completed a remarkable 4-3 comeback victory over Mainz 05 on Saturday, overcoming a three-goal halftime deficit to secure the win in the Bundesliga.
Mainz took a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime, with Jonas Urbig’s punch from a corner falling to Kaishu Sano, who crossed for Dominik Kohr to volley home in the 15th minute. Nadiem Amiri’s low drive was saved by Urbig, but Paul Nebel reacted quickest to bury the rebound for 2-0 in the 29th minute. Mainz struck again in first-half stoppage time when Sheraldo Becker scored to make it 3-0.
Bayern Munich made eight changes to their starting lineup for the trip to Mainz, with only Konrad Laimer, Aleksandar Pavlović and Luis Díaz retaining their places from the DFB Cup semi-final win against Bayer Leverkusen. Vincent Kompany’s rotation policy saw young midfielder Bara Sapoko Ndiaye make his first Bundesliga start, while stars including Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala and Manuel Neuer were named among the substitutes with Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain in mind.
The visitors dominated possession in the early stages but created little of note, with Raphaël Guerreiro’s acrobatic effort sailing over the bar. Mainz grew into the game and took the lead on 15 minutes when Jonas Urbig’s punch from a corner fell to Kaishu Sano, who crossed for Dominik Kohr to volley home. The hosts doubled their advantage on 29 minutes following a swift counter-attack. Nadiem Amiri’s low drive was well saved by Urbig, but Paul Nebel reacted quickest to bury the rebound. Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz made several fine saves to deny Nicolas Jackson, before the hosts struck again in first-half stoppage time.
Bayern began their comeback in the second half, with Nicolas Jackson pulling one back in the 53rd minute after an assist from Laimer. Michael Olise reduced the deficit further in the 73rd minute, also assisted by Laimer, to make it 3-2. Jamal Musiala then scored in the 80th minute to level the match at 3-3. Harry Kane completed the remarkable turnaround with the winning goal in the 83rd minute, securing a 4-3 victory for the Bundesliga champions.
With the Bundesliga title already secured, Bayern’s victory extended their lead at the top of the table to 18 points. The win came ahead of their crucial UEFA Champions League semi-final clash against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
Vincent Kompany explained that the decision to substitute in regular players like Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Jamal Musiala during the second half was planned. “It was planned. I don’t want to just leave everyone on the bench or give them a vacation, and at the same time I don’t want to take unnecessary risks. It was about keeping the fitness up,” Kompany said.
The coach emphasized the delicate balance required between giving regular players some downtime and allowing substitutes to showcase their abilities, while ensuring no player would be worn down ahead of the Champions League match against PSG.
Mainz, meanwhile, made just two changes from their draw at Borussia Mönchengladbach, with Silvan Widmer and Phillipp Mwene coming in for Anthony Caci and Nikolas Veratschnig.
