MUNICH – Bayern Munich rediscovered their scoring touch in emphatic fashion on Sunday, dispatching Hoffenheim 5-1 at the Allianz Arena. A hat-trick from Luis Díaz and a brace from Harry Kane restored a six-point lead at the Bundesliga summit for Vincent Kompany’s side, easing concerns after recent stumbles.
The victory wasn’t without its drama. A controversial early penalty awarded to Bayern, and the subsequent red card shown to Hoffenheim’s Kevin Akpoguma, significantly altered the complexion of the match. Despite playing with ten men for the majority of the contest, Hoffenheim demonstrated resilience, briefly leveling the score through Andrej Kramarić before being overwhelmed by Bayern’s attacking power.
Bayern started brightly, probing for an opening. Serge Gnabry was the first to threaten, firing just wide in the fourth minute after a neat setup from Michael Olise. The pivotal moment arrived in the 17th minute when Akpoguma was adjudged to have fouled Díaz in the penalty area. While the decision sparked protests from the Hoffenheim players, referee Tobias Stieler stood firm, awarding a penalty and sending Akpoguma off. Kane confidently converted from the spot, sending Oliver Baumann the wrong way.
Despite being a man down, Hoffenheim refused to wilt. They created several dangerous moments, and in the 35th minute, they drew level against the run of play. A poor clearance from Manuel Neuer was intercepted by Fisnik Asllani, who squared the ball for Kramarić to slot home. The equalizer briefly silenced the Allianz Arena and injected a renewed sense of belief into the visitors.
However, Hoffenheim’s joy proved short-lived. Bayern responded swiftly, regaining the lead just before halftime. Díaz won a second penalty after being brought down by Vladimir Coufal, and Kane once again dispatched the spot-kick with authority. Moments later, in added time, Díaz extended Bayern’s advantage, capitalizing on a swift counter-attack and a well-weighted pass from Kane.
The second half saw Bayern firmly in control. Díaz completed his hat-trick in the 62nd minute, finishing off a flowing move that began with an assist from Olise. The Colombian winger continued to torment the Hoffenheim defense, adding his third goal in the 89th minute, this time assisted by Jamal Musiala, to seal a comprehensive victory.
“It was a good week for us,” Kompany said after the match. “We started well, but it’s a different game when the opponent only has ten men. But we did what we had to do and those are situations you only get when you’re as present in the box as we were.”
Hoffenheim coach Christian Ilzer, while disappointed with the result, acknowledged his team’s effort. “We are very disappointed with the result and also that we were denied the chance to play against eleven players for so long. We showed that we can compete with one of the best teams in Europe, and that’s why I’m also proud of my players.”
The match highlighted Bayern’s attacking prowess, with Díaz and Kane proving to be a potent combination. Kane’s two penalties demonstrated his composure and reliability from the spot, while Díaz’s hat-trick showcased his pace, skill, and clinical finishing. The win also provided a much-needed boost to Bayern’s confidence after a recent dip in form, having gone two Bundesliga matches without a win prior to Sunday’s encounter.
The result also has significant implications for the Bundesliga title race. Bayern’s six-point lead over their nearest rivals puts them in a commanding position, although the season is far from over. Hoffenheim, despite the defeat, remain in contention for a European place, but will need to regroup and maintain their consistency in the coming weeks.
Bayern’s next challenge comes in the DFB-Pokal on Wednesday against RB Leipzig, followed by a Bundesliga trip to Werder Bremen on Saturday. Hoffenheim, meanwhile, will look to bounce back when they host SC Freiburg on Saturday.
