BBC and HBO’s ‘Half Man’: Jamie Bell and Richard Gadd to Star in New Drama Series
The BBC has announced the casting for Half Man, a six-episode drama series created by Richard Gadd. Gadd, who is also the star of the show, will perform alongside Jamie Bell, a BAFTA award-winning actor.
Half Man tells the story of two estranged brothers, Niall and Ruben. When Ruben unexpectedly appears at Niall’s wedding, their reunion ignites a violent confrontation that reveals their past. The series spans almost 40 years, covering their relationship from teenage years to adulthood, showcasing both their joys and conflicts. It aims to explore the question: What does it mean to be a man?
Richard Gadd expressed his excitement on playing Ruben and highlighted Jamie Bell’s talent. He wrote the role of Niall with Bell in mind and is grateful to have him in the project. Jamie Bell shared his enthusiasm for joining the creative team and praised Gadd’s work.
Production staff from Mam Tor Productions, Tally Garner and Morven Reid, praised Gadd and Bell’s casting and anticipated their on-screen chemistry. Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, emphasized the unique journey of the characters. Louise Thornton, Head of Commissioning at BBC Scotland, noted the series reflects BBC Scotland’s commitment to high-quality drama.
Kara Buckley, HBO’s Senior VP for Drama Programming, expressed admiration for both Gadd and Bell. The series is set to begin filming in Scotland in 2025. Half Man will air in 2026 on BBC iPlayer, BBC One, and BBC Scotland in the UK, and on HBO in the US. It is produced by Mam Tor Productions and supported by Screen Scotland. Banijay Rights will manage international distribution outside the UK and Ireland.
