The BBC has announced the end of its long-running football programme Football Focus after 52 years on air, citing changing audience behaviours and a shift toward digital consumption as the primary reasons for the decision.
First broadcast in 1974, Football Focus has been a staple of Saturday lunchtime television, providing fans with interviews, analysis and stories from across the game ahead of weekend fixtures. The programme will continue to air until the end of the current season before being taken off the air this summer.
According to BBC Sport, the decision follows extensive consideration of how audiences now engage with football content, with increasing numbers turning to digital platforms and on-demand services for highlights, discussion and analysis rather than linear television broadcasts.
Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, stated that the change reflects the broadcaster’s commitment to evolving its delivery methods to reach fans wherever they are, emphasising that the decision was made prior to any wider BBC savings announcements.
Despite the programme’s conclusion, BBC Sport confirmed that its football rights portfolio remains strong and that it plans to significantly expand its digital output this year. This includes growing content across BBC platforms and launching a new slate of exclusive shows on YouTube featuring fresh formats and big personalities.
The current presenter of Football Focus, Alex Scott, will remain at the heart of BBC Sport’s football coverage and continue to be involved in the broadcaster’s biggest sporting moments.
As part of the transition, Kelly Somers’ The Football Interview will move to a Saturday 12:45 BST slot on BBC One from next season, while Final Score with Jason Mohammad will begin earlier at 15:45 BST.
The BBC said the shift would allow it to deliver more high-quality, accessible and engaging football coverage at scale, responding to evolving viewing habits while maintaining its commitment to comprehensive football reporting across multiple platforms.
