LUBECK, Germany – German beach volleyball duo Tilo Rietschel, of Lubeck, and Momme Lorenz, of Kiel, narrowly missed securing a podium finish at the Beach Volleyball Future tournament in Songkhla, Thailand. The pair, who previously earned a silver medal at a similar tournament in Coolangatta, Australia, concluded their competition in Asia just outside the medal ranks.
After advancing to the semi-finals, Rietschel and Lorenz were defeated by the Israeli team of Elazar and Cuzmiciov with scores of 19-21 and 15-21. Subsequently, they faced the Thai team of Dunwinit Kaewsai and Banlue nakprakhong in the bronze medal match, losing in straight sets 18-21, 17-21.
“When you reach the semi-finals, you naturally aim for more, but we were already feeling the strain on the final day,” Rietschel said. He noted the demanding conditions of up to 35 degrees celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) and high humidity on Samila Beach. Despite the near miss, Rietschel reflected positively on their recent performances. “The three and a half weeks spent in Australia and Thailand have strengthened our partnership. These international experiences are invaluable.”
Lorenz to Relocate to Hamburg
The recent tournaments have placed Rietschel and Lorenz just outside the top 100 in the world rankings. They currently hold the seventh position in Germany. “Qualification for the German Championships in Timmendorfer strand is now highly probable,” Rietschel added.
Following their time in Thailand, Lorenz is planning a move from Berlin to Hamburg. “Momme has found his own apartment,” Rietschel clarified, indicating they will not be living together. In Hamburg, the duo intends to train alongside top teams, including Olympic contenders Nils Ehlers and Clemens Wickler, while continuing to accumulate ranking points at various tournaments.
upcoming Tournaments: Philippines, Italy, and Hamburg
The pair’s schedule includes a Future tournament in the Philippines in May, followed by a competition in Cervia, italy. They will also participate in the “King of the Court” format and a stop on the german Beach Tour in Hamburg. “We will only be in Germany for brief periods over the next few months,” Rietschel stated.
Looking ahead, Rietschel and Lorenz are considering hiring a coach to further enhance their performance. “That would be a notable boost for us, as we aim to be fully prepared for the European Championship in July. Qualification remains our primary objective.”
The challenge lies in securing funding for a coach, as the duo is part of the federal youth squad 1. Along with support from Club 111, the state sports association, and “Team Lubeck,” Rietschel is supported by sporting goods company Decathlon. The athletes are not yet able to fully support themselves through prize money alone. Their recent tournaments yielded $400 in Thailand and $700 in Australia. Higher earnings are available in the second-highest category, the Challenge tournaments. Rietschel concluded, “We aim to be a prominent presence from the autumn onwards.”
