Laryssa Brasil Bassanesi went with her son to a children’s football championship in Goiânia and called the coach a ‘monkey’. She was eventually arrested on charges of racism, but the psychologist’s husband believes his wife is suffering “persecution for being beautiful and successful”
A psychologist was arrested in Goiânia last Saturday (2) after calling a children’s soccer coach a monkey. In his defense at the police station, her husband said that his wife had suffered persecution because she was beautiful and successful.
Laryssa Brasil Bassanesi committed the crime while watching her son play in a championship in the region. “The complainants said she insulted the opposing coach, calling him a monkey several times to several witnesses,” said police chief Humberto Teófilo.
The PM-GO was called, but the woman had already left when the agents arrived. She was arrested shortly afterwards at her home, in the Setor Marista neighbourhood, in the capital.
“She said she was misunderstood, she said she was very nervous,” the police chief said. “Her husband said that because she was beautiful, she was being chased out of jealousy because they were successful,” she added.
The psychologist was released after a custody hearing. In a video recorded by witnesses, Laryssa confirms that she said “monkey”, but denies the racist intent. “There were three boys from their team, and they, coaches, kept posing. I said: ‘Look, they look like monkeys’. So, he thinks I spoke against his person, against his skin. I already apologized”, he defended himself.
