GROSSKLEIN,Austria‍ (AP) — Educational institutions in Großklein,in collaboration with the market town and local businesses, have expanded their lunch catering program with support ⁣from the Styria health fund. The initiative includes improvements to the menu and the construction of ⁣a new dining ‍room.

Currently, schools, municipalities, and companies can apply for up to 4,170 euros in funding for community catering projects.

Focus on Regional, Healthy Eating

“It⁣ is indeed vital to me that our children develop awareness of regional food and healthy eating from an early age,” said ⁢Christoph‍ Zirngast, mayor of Großklein.

Previously, two local inns ‍provided lunch for students in kindergarten,⁤ elementary school, and ⁣the music middle school. However, ⁤students ⁢ate at the inns, requiring them to navigate⁤ a potentially dangerous⁣ narrow passage daily. The municipality addressed this by building a dining room and warming kitchen connected to‍ the elementary‍ school.

The food offerings were also improved to provide a healthier⁣ and more ⁣diverse selection.⁢ The ⁤project was implemented from ⁢September 2024 to February 2025 as part⁢ of a Styria health fund campaign.

Promoting Citizen⁣ Health

Health Council member karlheinz kornhäusl ⁢emphasized the importance of the initiative. “Prevention is central to a healthy life, so we want to‍ make it as easy as possible for ⁣children to ⁤try out healthy⁤ food and develop a taste for a healthy diet,” Kornhäusl said. “The initiative ‘G’s and enjoy together’ makes an critically important contribution to this.”

Kornhäusl thanked Zirngast and othre supporters for promoting health in Großklein.

healthy Lunch: A Collaborative ⁤Effort

Children in Großklein ⁣can ‍now eat healthy⁣ lunches directly at ‍school in the new dining room. ⁢A⁣ dedicated employee manages food distribution and has completed catering management training.

Anita Winkler of Styria Vitalis, who oversaw the project through ‘G’s and enjoy,’ noted the collaborative⁣ effort. “A lot has happened. In⁤ numerous workshops, together with the ⁣inns, we have further⁢ developed the food offer,” Winkler said. The Styrian ‍minimum standards for‍ joint catering⁤ served as the foundation⁢ for these improvements.

New Menu, Payment System

Andrea⁤ Mair, director of the elementary school, highlighted the collaborative process of menu development. “We⁢ looked at where we are now and where we want to go. We⁤ discussed ⁢this in several rounds in different constellations, and the ⁢children were also able‍ to get involved,” Mair said.

The inns coordinated their offerings to create⁣ a unified menu, a first for the program. A new app-based payment system is being implemented to replace cash payments. The children⁣ also participated ‍in the design of the dining⁢ room.

Mair also‍ noted the positive impact ‍of Ms. Adam, who is responsible for food planning. “A lunch that ⁣is nicely served in ⁤a loving ambience just⁣ tastes better,” Mair said.

Sample Menu Items

  • Whole grain pasta with tomato herb sauce
  • Potato goulash ⁢with lettuce
  • Kaiserschmarren with apple ‍sauce
  • Natural schnitzel ⁣with pea rice

Encouraging New Tastes

Zirngast acknowledged individual preferences but emphasized the value of introducing children to⁤ new foods. “It is indeed frequently ⁤enough easy to get to no food and ingredients ⁤that may not come ‍on the table so often at home and of which you⁣ don’t even know that they actually taste very good,” Zirngast said.

Mair echoed this⁣ sentiment. “A lot has improved. The new⁣ dining room was designed generously and lovingly, and with⁤ Ms. Adam we found a very committed ‍person who does the food in an appealing ⁤way. This is also well received ⁤by ⁣the children,” Mair said.

Funding Available for 2025

Schools, kindergartens, homes, and companies that offer⁤ meals can apply for up to 4,170 euros in funding. The funding supports the implementation ⁤of⁣ Styrian minimum ⁢standards, dining plan checks, and the financing‍ of related costs,⁤ such as vegetable gardens or regional and seasonal vegetables for snacks.
